Hunting Season Storage in South Texas: Where to Keep Your Gear, Feeders & Trailer

Blinds, feeders, ATVs and trailers, how to store hunting gear the right way between seasons in Atascosa County.

Camo UTV and deer feeder on a utility trailer near a tripod box blind in South Texas brush

When general deer season opens in South Texas each November, Highway 16 fills with trucks headed for leases across Atascosa, McMullen, Frio, La Salle and Live Oak counties. And when the season ends in January, all that gear needs a home again. If your garage looks like a sporting goods store every February, storage might be the answer.

What hunters store with us

  • Box blinds, tripod stands and ladder stands
  • Feeders, timers and spare parts (empty of corn, see below)
  • ATVs, UTVs and side-by-sides
  • Utility and enclosed trailers
  • Camp gear: cots, coolers, tables, propane-free grills, generators drained of fuel
  • Decoys, game carts, processing tables

Choosing the right unit

What you're storingBest fit
Camp gear, stands and feeders5' x 10' or 10' x 10'
One ATV plus gear10' x 15' drive-up
Side-by-side or two ATVs plus gear10' x 20' drive-up
Enclosed trailer, boat or camperOpen 11' x 20' parking space
Everything, truck bed's worth plus a UTV10' x 30' drive-up

Drive-up access is the key feature for hunters: back the trailer to the door, roll the ATV off, and you're done. With 24/7 gate access, you can grab gear at 4 AM on opening morning.

How to store hunting gear the right way

  1. Empty and clean feeders. Leftover corn draws pests and can grow aflatoxin. Never store feed or bait in a unit.
  2. Drain fuel from generators, or run them dry. Don't store gas cans or propane cylinders.
  3. Prep your ATV. Add fuel stabilizer before the off-season, put a tender on the battery or disconnect it, and check tire pressure in the fall.
  4. Dry everything. Wet canvas and blinds mildew fast in South Texas humidity.
  5. Elevate off the floor on pallets.
  6. Firearms and ammunition: check your rental agreement and keep them in your home safe, not a storage unit.

Lease-season tip: Our location on Highway 16 means many hunters headed south out of San Antonio pass right by. Park the trailer here, then hitch up on the way to the lease without dragging it through the city.

Off-season uses for the same unit

Once the gear is put away in January, the same unit can hold fishing gear for spring, patio furniture for the winter, or the deer blind you're rebuilding over the summer.

A hunter's off-season checklist

  • Inventory blinds and stands; note repairs needed before next fall
  • Wash and fully dry camo, blinds and seat cushions
  • Pull batteries out of feeder timers, game cameras and flashlights
  • Service the ATV/UTV, add stabilizer, and connect a battery tender
  • Grease trailer hubs and check tires and lights
  • Store everything off the floor and away from the door seal

Bring it back out in the fall

Archery season opens before rifle season, so plan to pull your gear out in late summer to check feeders, fix stands and get cameras back in the field. Because the gate is open 24/7, you can swing by before dawn on your way to the lease.

Frequently asked questions

Can I store an ATV in a storage unit?

Yes. A 10x15 drive-up unit fits most ATVs plus gear; a side-by-side usually needs a 10x20.

Can I store deer feeders and blinds?

Yes, just empty all corn and feed first, since feed attracts pests.

Is there trailer storage near Poteet?

Yes. We have open 11'x20' parking spaces for trailers, boats and RVs with 24/7 access.
